Germany to Return WWII-Looted Polish Cultural Treasures

(MENAFN) Germany is expected to return a number of Polish cultural artifacts taken during World War II, in what is being described as a symbolic gesture tied to long-standing efforts at historical restitution.

According to reports, Polish newds said on Monday that the items include a ring linked to King Sigismund I the Old, a fragment of a medieval manuscript containing Gaude Mater Polonia, and literary works by renowned Polish author Stefan Żeromski.

The transfer is expected to take place this month and is seen as marking the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Polish-German Treaty on Good Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, a key agreement shaping relations between the two countries after the end of communist rule in 1989.

The artifacts are considered significant elements of Poland’s cultural heritage and are part of a much larger collection of cultural losses sustained during the German occupation of Poland between 1939 and 1945.

The reported return follows earlier restitution efforts, including Germany’s handover of additional medieval Polish documents in December 2025, reflecting a gradual acceleration in the process of recovering wartime-looted cultural property.
