Poland Could Host Up to 15,000 US Troops, Deputy Minister Says
Wziatek said the total could break down into 4,000 to 5,000 permanently stationed troops, supplemented by an additional 10,000 to 11,000 personnel deployed on a rotational basis. "Fifteen thousand American soldiers in Poland means strength, defensive capabilities for our country, and allied cooperation," he said, though he declined to go into further detail, noting that "it's not only Poles who are listening to us."
According to Wziatek, the buildup would likely happen in phases, with the full troop presence potentially reached sometime before 2039.
The remarks follow comments last week from US President Donald Trump, who said "major progress" was being made toward establishing a new US Army base in Poland and called it a potential "historic step" in relations between the two countries. Trump did not specify whether the base would house permanently stationed forces.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is due to meet US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington on Wednesday for talks centered on Poland's security and the prospect of a permanent American military presence. Kosiniak-Kamysz said last week that a decision on the base is expected "in the coming weeks."
A US delegation traveled to Poland earlier this month to scout potential sites for the facility. Wziatek said the base would likely be located in western Poland, arguing that such positioning would make it "harder to attack." He added, however, that "the Americans will have the final say on the location."
Poland formally floated the idea of a permanent US base in June, building on the roughly 10,000 American troops already stationed in the country — the bulk of whom currently serve under rotational deployment arrangements.
